Biden Proposes Free Birth Control Without A Prescription—But Trump Could Nix Rule

President Joe Biden’s administration has proposed new rules under the Affordable Care Act to require insurers to offer over-the-counter birth control without a prescription at no cost to patients. The rules also mandate coverage for emergency contraception, condoms, and spermicide, and require insurers to inform patients of these offerings. While the ACA already covers birth control without cost, it did not include non-prescription options when it was enacted in 2010. The proposal comes just before the election, with Democrats emphasizing reproductive care access and criticizing Republicans for the reversal of Roe v. Wade.
