Luigi Mangione, a 26-year-old suspect in the murder of UnitedHealth CEO Brian Thompson, is set to contest his extradition to New York following his arrest in Pennsylvania. His attorney, Thomas Dickey, revealed on Good Morning America that the defense aims to scrutinize the evidence and details of the charges before proceeding. Mangione faces charges in New York, including second-degree murder, criminal possession of a weapon, and possession of a forged instrument due to a fake ID.
CNN legal analyst Karen Agnifilo suggests that delaying extradition could provide Dickey with additional time to prepare a defense and request more evidence for the upcoming hearing. The extradition process could span from a few days to two months, with Blair County District Attorney Peter Weeks estimating up to 45 days.
Mangione is entitled to an evidentiary hearing in Pennsylvania, where the Manhattan district attorney’s office must present a witness, as reported by The New York Times.
