Luigi Mangione, a 26-year-old suspect accused of the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, had reportedly shared his struggles with lower back pain and spondylolisthesis on social media. Spondylolisthesis is a condition where a vertebra in the spine slips out of place, often resulting from spondylolysis, which is a stress fracture or weakness in the vertebra. According to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, this condition can lead to symptoms such as lower back pain, thigh pain, tight hamstrings, and numbness radiating down one leg. It is more common in younger individuals who engage in sports that involve hyperextension of the lumbar spine, such as gymnastics, football, and weightlifting. Some medical experts also suggest that certain individuals may be predisposed to this condition due to having thinner vertebrae. Spondylolisthesis can vary in severity, with high-grade slips potentially causing significant pain, nerve damage, and necessitating surgical intervention. Severe cases may require spinal fusion surgery to realign and stabilize the affected vertebrae.
