What To Know About ‘Ghost Guns’—The Weapon Allegedly Used In The UnitedHealthcare CEO Shooting

Luigi Mangione, the suspect in the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, utilized a ‘ghost gun,’ as reported by police officials. These firearms, often assembled at home, are becoming more accessible due to advancements in technology.
During Mangione’s arrest, officers discovered a 3D-printed pistol loaded with a Glock magazine containing six nine-millimeter full metal jacket rounds, along with a 3D-printed silencer in his backpack, according to police reports.
Authorities confirmed that the gun and silencer matched the weapon used in Thompson’s murder.
Unlike conventional firearms, ‘ghost guns’ typically lack serial numbers and are untraceable, as they are usually sold as kits that require assembly by the purchaser.
The ease of obtaining 3D-printed guns is increasing. While Microsoft’s AI chatbot Copilot does not directly instruct users on how to build a 3D-printed gun, it does provide numerous links to detailed online manuals for manufacturing these weapons at home, according to Forbes.
