President-elect Donald Trump ridiculed Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau by referring to him as a governor and Canada as a state in a post on his Truth Social platform early Tuesday. This came after Trudeau warned that a tariff war between the two countries would lead to higher prices for Americans.
Speaking at an event organized by the Halifax Chamber of Commerce on Monday, Trudeau stated that Americans were beginning to realize that tariffs on Canadian goods would significantly increase living costs in the U.S. While acknowledging that Trump’s proposed 25% tariffs on all Canadian imports would be devastating for Canada’s economy, Trudeau emphasized that it would also cause substantial hardship for Americans.
Trudeau also mentioned that his government would respond to unfair tariffs, as they did eight years ago, referencing the duties imposed on some American imports in retaliation to the first Trump administration’s tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum.
In a mocking response on Truth Social, Trump said, “It was a pleasure to have dinner the other night with Governor Justin Trudeau of the Great State of Canada.” He added that he looks forward to meeting Trudeau again soon to continue their discussions on tariffs and trade, which he claimed would yield spectacular results for all.
