The True Story Behind New Netflix Formula 1 Series ‘Senna’

The upcoming Netflix series “Senna” chronicles the life of Ayrton Senna, a Formula 1 legend who tragically passed away in a racing accident 30 years ago. The series delves into his personal relationships, off-track persona, and the Grand Prix race that led to his untimely death.
Gabriel Leone stars as the Brazilian driver who secured three world championships, earning a reputation as one of the fastest drivers in F1 history. The six-part drama, premiering on November 29, also features Pâmela Tomé as Senna’s TV star girlfriend Xuxa, Matt Mella as French driver Alain Prost, and Patrick Kennedy as McLaren team principal Ron Dennis.
Senna began his Formula 1 career at the Brazilian Grand Prix with Toleman in 1984, later racing for Lotus and McLaren over a decade-long career. He died during the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix in Italy after a 191-mph crash into a concrete wall.
Senna’s death prompted several changes in Formula 1, including restrictions on car aerodynamics and the introduction of a pit lane speed limit. His death was the last in a World Championship Grand Prix until Jules Bianchi’s fatal accident in 2015.
Senna was renowned not only for his victories but also for his intense rivalry with fellow McLaren driver Prost, a relationship highlighted in the 2010 film “Senna.” His career made him a national hero in Brazil, where the country observed three days of national mourning, and over a million people lined the streets upon his return from Italy.
