Levi Strauss Heir Wins San Francisco’s Mayoral Race—Here’s How Much He Spent On His Run

Daniel Lurie, an heir to the Levi Strauss fortune, emerged victorious in San Francisco’s mayoral election on Thursday, as incumbent London Breed—the city’s first Black woman mayor who also led its COVID-19 response—conceded the race. Following Breed’s concession, Lurie expressed deep gratitude to his family, campaign team, and every San Franciscan who voted for accountability, service, and change. Lurie, also a Democrat like Breed, positioned himself as a political outsider, criticizing the incumbent administration for the city’s post-pandemic challenges, including the drug crisis, homelessness, and crime. San Francisco’s ranked-choice voting system showed Lurie securing 56.2% of the vote in the final round, compared to Breed’s 43.8%. As the founder of the anti-poverty non-profit Tipping Point Community, Lurie has pledged to expand homeless shelters, declare a “fentanyl state of emergency,” shut down “open-air drug markets,” and hire more police officers.
